Trion, the third largest ultra-deep water project in the world

The Trion project is 2,500 meters deep, approximately 180 km off the Mexican coast.

Towards the end of June, Woodside Energy made the decision to develop the resources of Trion, the most important ultra-deep water project in Mexico.

The development of the Trion project is subject to the approval of alliances, which has practically been agreed. It is also conditioned on the regulatory authorization of the development plan for field extraction (PDE), which is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2023. The first oil production is planned until 2028.

The total planned investment amounts to $7.2 billion. The development of the project is expected to generate solid returns for Woodside's shareholders, as well as economic and social benefits for Mexico.

Trión, which covers an area of 1,285 square kilometers, is estimated to contain resources of 480 million barrels of equivalent crude oil. The initial estimate points to a production of 120,000 barrels per day.

The subsoil has been the subject of an exhaustive evaluation, with the drilling of six wells along the reservoir. This has provided information to Woodside Energy for a greater understanding of this great, high-quality conventional resource.

Trion will include the installation of a floating production unit (FPU), a floating storage and unloading vessel (FSO) and 18 wells (9 producers, seven water injectors and two gas injectors) in the initial phase.

With a total of 24 wells drilled during the life of the project, the floating production unit (FPU) will have an oil production capacity of 100,000 to 120,000 barrels per day.

It will be the size of a football stadium and will be twice as large as the Shenzi platform (50,000 vs 25,000 tons).

The Trion field was discovered in 2012.
